    Why a support stack matters

Isolation makes every ADHD symptom worse. The 5th pillar of the ADDA framework — covered in full in how to manage adult ADHD — is building a real support system. "Real" means people and resources you'll actually use, not a saved list of links you bookmark and never open.

Most thriving ADHD adults end up with some combination of: a peer community, a coach or therapist, and at least one person in their daily life who knows and gets it.

ADHD support groups (free or low-cost)

ADDA (Attention Deficit Disorder Association) runs the largest English-language community for adult ADHD, with 25+ virtual support groups across topics (newly diagnosed, women, late-diagnosed, work, parenting). Membership tiers include free options.

CHADD hosts local in-person and virtual chapters across the US; their adult support groups are typically free.

Reddit r/ADHD and r/ADHDers — large, generally well-moderated peer communities. Useful for normalization, less useful for medical decisions.

Facebook groups — quality varies wildly. Look for groups that ban product pitches and require some moderation.

    ADHD coaches

An ADHD coach is not a therapist. Coaches help you build systems, set goals, and stay accountable — they don't treat mental health conditions. Look for credentials from the Professional Association for ADHD Coaches (PAAC) or the ADHD Coaches Organization (ACO). Typical costs: $100–$300 per session, often packaged as 3- or 6-month engagements. Many offer a free 20-minute discovery call — use it to assess fit.

    Therapists who actually know ADHD

Look specifically for clinicians trained in CBT for ADHD (the Safren protocol is the most-cited adaptation), ACT, or DBT skills work. Generalist talk therapy is usually a poor fit for ADHD-specific challenges. Directories: Psychology Today (filter for ADHD), Inclusive Therapists, the ADDA professional directory.

    Body doubling services

If accountability is your bottleneck more than insight, services like Focusmate (paired video coworking) and various Discord servers offer cheap or free body-doubling. For many ADHD adults this delivers more day-to-day productivity gain than an hour of therapy.

How to choose what to add first

Newly diagnosed and overwhelmed → join one free peer group (ADDA or CHADD). Stuck on systems and follow-through → coach. Persistent low mood, anxiety, or trauma alongside ADHD → therapist first, coach later. Burned out and depleted → see the ADHD burnout recovery plan before adding anything new.

    What about medication providers?

Coaches and support groups don't prescribe. If you're still pre-diagnosis, start with how to get tested for ADHD and how doctors test for ADHD. For pricing context, see how much ADHD testing costs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

For adult ADHD, often yes — the convenience makes attendance more consistent, which is what actually drives benefit. ADDA and CHADD both run high-quality virtual groups.

    Does insurance cover ADHD coaching?+

Almost never. Coaching is not a licensed clinical service. HSA/FSA coverage varies; check your plan.

What's the difference between an ADHD coach and a therapist?+

Coaches focus on present and future skill-building, accountability, and systems. Therapists treat mental health conditions, including the depression, anxiety, and trauma that often accompany ADHD.
